There are many words today that are almost guaranteed to be used by a public figure during a speech in today’s society. Climate change, equality, equity, white supremacy, racism, moving forward, lived truth. The only problem is, none of these things are more of a threat than the government itself right now. The government wants you focused on everyone else, because they have become the biggest threat to anyone’s rights. They pay all kinds of people boatloads of your cash to over-dramatize your fears around any one of these topics, but in reality less government would fix a lot of them.
This is for two reasons. One, usually when the government says it’s solving a problem, they’re paying a lot of money to people they know to do very little about it. You can see this with industry regulations, they’re often never tough enough because they’re made by people in the industry. This takes pressure off your mind, and leads you to believe that you do not have to be as conscious of your own actions, because the government is on it. This often leads to little or no change ever happening. This is also true of government funded advocacy groups and government ministries. They typically take actions that do little or no concrete or permanent change. Why would they? There’s no incentive, if they solve the problem, they’re out of a job.
The second reason is if you have more money in your pocket and more freedom to move and grow, then you have the ability to make better choices. Feeling trapped either physically or financially is a huge factor in mental health, so if the government just got out of your way, you would be more conscious about making positive moral choices, instead of being forced to think about yourself and your own day-to-day survival.
If we recognize that the government is terrible at everything, and that our society is actually one that is extremely conscious about making moral decisions (which is why we elect governments who want to make them for us) then we can actually do more to create a better and more equal world for ourselves and those around us.
